February 27, 2007:
The Euro shelf is still available
Just not from any USA dealership … I don’t think any US aftermarket company carries it now either - but you can still get it from MikeyTheMINI over at NewMINIstuff in England!

For those that don’t know (is there anyone?!) the euro shelf installs under the steering wheel, replacing the knee bolster, and gives you a nice easy-to-reach shelf to store smaller items; I keep travel tissues there, others keep their iPod or similar. It’s a really nice shelf, all my MINIs have had one, and it’s great that there’s still a source for it.

I’ve got about $700 of stuff I want to order from him, but my last two emails (several months ago, now) went straight to /dev/null. Makes me a little less enthusiastic about buying from him. Mostly I’m looking for an answer as to whether he’d be able to switch the speaker output for his aftermarket nav integration adapter from right to left.

That’s odd Brian … I emailed Mike this morning about the euro shelf (someone asked me about it), and got a reply within an hour!

I’ll try him again, then! That’s the address I used. I did correspond with him back in ‘05; maybe I said something to piss him off.

I’ve had very inconsistent responses from Mikey. My experience is that he will respond the same or next day if he sees your e-mail, but if a second day passes with no reply, there will be no reply at all, and you have to try again. It’s as though he tries to reply immediately to current e-mail but doesn’t go back and review messages from a day or two earlier. I think he gets busy with hands-on work at his shop and he really needs help and better organization to handle the front office customer contact stuff.
So you need to be more tenacious and assume that lack of timely reply means Mikey never saw your message. A couple of times when I really wanted to get his attention, I applied a three prong approach: send him an e-mail, send him a PM on MINI2, and post your question on a MINI2 thread that he seems to be following. Do all three of those all at once.

They may not be available from American dealership, but I walked into the aprts section at my local Mini dealership and ordered the parts easily. And yes, I asked — they have no qualms about shipping to America.
The parts are:
07131472727 - Mutter (nut) - 2
07136800957 - Schraube (screw) - 2
07147133620 - Torxschraub (torx screw) - 10
51161186417 - Ablegefach (I kid you not — “pigeon hole”) - 1
51167057375 - Einlegematt (insert matt) - 1
51457072009 - Blind plate - 1
If you’re interested, call Marcus (49) 6201-63041 — their staff speaks excellent English. I am sure that, with these listed parts numbers and a credit card, they can hook you up. One could probably get away with ordering the Ablegefach, the Einlegematt, and the plate, and scrounging the rest locally themselves as / if needed.
Their websites are:

I think Richard is spot on. You either get Mike right away or not at all. Bump yourself back up with a “reply all” to your own note.
Minimania have shelves. Mine just arrived last week (Feb 20th, 2007) It’s their item number NMI7610 for $169.95 and comes with liner, plate etc.
It costs more than Mike’s but if you’re shipping to the US then the advantage is smaller and the hassle-factor is reduced.
http://www.MINSPEED.net (what was MyMini until BMW bullied them into changing their name) will have them shortly.

Here’s a thought. Get Mike’s attention by dropping some big names. Like for your subject line, use “Ian Cull thought you might have an answer to this question…”
Seriously though, I’m sure he gets a mountain of e-mail and spam, and whatever you can do to stand out will help. Try to word your subject line with something specific that might interest him to open it up.
