March 24, 2006:
Time for tires
A shout out for opinions
My Pirelli PZero Nero tires are reaching the end of their life after 1-1/2 years and 25,000 miles.
When I bought my Pirellis, TireRack recommended the size 205/50 R16 - I guess that is still the best aftermarket size, since the choice of 195/55 R16 is pitiful!
On TireRack you can compare different choices easily - here I compared five possible options for an all-season 205/50 R16 tire, including the Pirelli PZero Nero, and a Bridgestone Potenza choice.
It looks like the Pirellis are still the best choice - but am I missing some other options? Remember, I want a 16″ tire and I don’t want to switch to winter tires so I want all-seasons.

I have had remarkably good success with the BF Goodrich T/A KD on an MCS JCW.. . . . but hey, thats just my opinion

You might give Hankook V4es H105 a look. This is a V rated all season tire with a higher UTQG treadwear rateing that the Pirelli and at a very good price.

I am very happy with my Toyo Proxes 4. They don’t sell them at Tire Rack. I bought them at a local shop and they were cheaper that any Pirelli, Bridgestone or BF Goodrich at Tire Rack.
I have the 205/50 16’s

On my ‘02 MCS it had some type of Pirelli’s. Very sticky but the mileage was very bad….18, 000 miles and they were history. I have tried Pirelli’s over the 30 years and never had good luck with them mileage wise.
On my ‘04 MCS I have Dunlop SP Sport 9000 DSST. They are a nice all around tire. Quiet, for a RF, decent handling but not as good under hard cornering as those Pirelli’s were but I already have 25,210 on them and they still look good.
Good Luck in your choice.

I try to stay away from “no-season” tires as I like to call them, but every year new models come out each with their own improvements. A good glance through recent car magazines will feature tons of full-page tire ads and should give you a good idea of any recently introduced tire models.
My issue is I still don’t know any place that mounts and balances tires around here cheaply and reliably. Last I went to sullivan tire but they charged $160 to mount and balance 15’s. And often I’ve had other places than never balance correctly on the first try.

Wow….$160! I had my S lites done for $85 and that was only because I bought them at Tire Rack and had them shipped to them. Otherwise they have charged me a lot less. The biggest problem most have are with the RF rims and tires.

through the years I’ve been very happy with Direct Tire (I think there’s now one up in Danvers, closer to you Ian). They have long been a Toyo dealer, and will evaluate them; I’ve also been seeing good things about Goodyear.

I just put on my second set of BFGoodrich Traction T/A. Excellent dry/wet traction and over 40000 miles ! Check them out.

Aqualung, I went to directtire for a quote on Nokians (which I got elsewhere for $400). They quoted me $600 plus $200 installation. I laughed and walked out the door.

Josh, that’s weird. I went to DirectTire with my Nokians. They balanced and mounted them for $100…
