March 1, 2005:
Is this the roof of GBMINI#3?
I have been debating how to customise GBMINI#3 - I don’t want to do another Union Jack.
For a while I have been discussing more chrome with Julian at Sublime Restorations; he gave me a lead on chrome paint, but in the end the cost is ludicrously high and the work involved is massive!
Then tonight, I received an email from a MINI friend, Al, linking to this eBay item:

At nearly $1200 it is actually not a bad price - but I don’t know how much installation labor would be added, or how to transport it from the seller in England!

Well it is pretty different, not my taste but if it floats your boat go for it. It would keep the car cooler.
I’d say spend your money on some snappy rims to dress it up and loose those kinda plain Jane wagon wheels.
Hey Ian, why not have a contest with all these graphics people that own Minis design a roof for ya. There sure seems to be no lack of them on Gabe’s site and others.

I rather expected “no” responses
I am not really seriously considering this - although I did email the seller for install details.
My current roof plan is a “moving S” - the “S” of the MCS logo, somehow depicted to indicate movement.

I saw this mentioned earlier today in a “Bling” thread, I forget which forum…but I didn’t think it was bad at all! A hard time keeping it clean maybe… But it is the one case where I think chrome mirrors look good!

You saying you don’t like chrome mirrors Josh?
(I am still not sure about them either - I guess I will soon find out)

I think it’s kinda cool. But, keeping it clean could drive a person insane. Keeping my chrome mirror caps clean is not easy (to the point I don’t fight it during the least few winter months anymore). But it is interesting indeed. Would want to see in person before I’d commit to it, which is hard to do since it would be coming from England.
How about a collage of Mini’s painted on the roof that spells “S”? Kind of like what Playboy did on the cover of (I just looked it up) the 45th anniversary issue… The artist took the covers of all the issues from the 45 years and positioned them into a “Marliyn Monroe”, etc. I thought it was a number, not a collage of a person. But, I’m going on memory here. Here’s what I found though:

Would probably cost as much as another Mini to do it, but that would be unique for sure! :o)

I got an email reply from the seller, telling me a roof was just shipped to Miami, at a cost of $350-$400.
The roof is a “glue on” panel, perhaps a bit like the rumoured clip-on roof for the next gen MINI …
So who in Florida has a chrome roof?

Ian,
Why stop there?
You could get a hundred yards of “ScotchTint” and chrome the entire car! Replace the “GBMINI” plate with “BLING” and you’re all set.
The question is…if you turned on your headlamps, would anyone see them?
;o)

Ian,
This is BIG BLING! The roof graphic contest sounds pretty good. Everybody would enjoy some new ideas for spring…

Where the hell is the car? Must be in route.
